Route 66 may start in Chicago, but it really began down on the farm. Farmers were the  first to fight for paved roads. Their battle cry? "Get the farmer out of the mud!" In 1925, the U.S. Department of Agriculture started a nationwide system of new roads… including the famed Route 66!
